Purchase Date: 28th May 2010
Depicting: Little Bo-Peep - Doulton tile panel designed by Margaret Thompson and William Rowe and made at the Lambeth Studion on 1876
Card Info: It was not until the 1867 Paris exhibition that the English tile Manufacturers, who were reproducing enormous quantities of tiles for the domestic market with the aid of mass production techniques, thought of reviving the art of hand-painted ceramic murals. Taking the fifteenth-century ceramic work of Della Robbia in Florentine hospitals as precedent. Doulton executed extensive panel schemes in several London hospitals and elsewhere in the country, and some were exported. Little Bo-Peep is one of a series of nursery rhyme panels which decorated the Lillian ward at St Thomas' Hospital in Lambeth.
Artist: Margaret Thomas and William Rowe.
Price Paid: 50p
